Though a simple concept, Men’s Sheds are making a phenomenal impact on men around the globe. Why?
1. Making use of your talents
With a lifetime of skills and knowledge behind each member, the Men’s Shed offers an opportunity to put these talents to use by sharing with and teaching others.
“Men go to the Shed because they’ve got a bit of time on their hands and they’ve got experience, knowledge, creativity and good ideas. Put all that good stuff into the mix and good stuff comes out of it.”
John Evoy, Founder of the Irish Men’s Shed Association
2. Getting creative
Being creative has the power to change your days, your weeks and your life.
I like using my hands to make things, fix things and just tinker” says Andres Swain.
I also like to learn new skills from my fellow Shedders and share my own skills with them.
3. Having a purpose
Men’s Sheds have given thousands of men around the world a new lease on life. While many members are retired, others are stll working or in‐between jobs, simply looking for another outlet or for something productive to do with their spare time.
“It gives people a reason to get up in the morning”, says John Evoy.
The Shed experience has allowed me to meet new people, make new friends, and learn lots of new things”, says John Howard.
“It’s very comforting to know that there’s a group of guys with whom one can share experiences and simple hang out.” Bud Caputo
“Men don’t talk face to face but they will talk Shoulder to Shoulder” is very true.”
“I lost my wife and I was lost. The guys in the Shed help me through the bad times.” FS
5. Well Being
Research has shown that being part of a Men’s Shed leads to better health, improved skills, wellbeing and confidence.
“I have always be greeted with smiling and attentive faces, and most importantly, I always feel welcomed and relevant. It’s almost like attending a class reunion with best friends wanting to know what you been up to,” says Blake Willoughby . Men who feel at home in the Men’s Shed benefit from improved feeling better about themselves.
6. Creating a new circle of friends
Statistics show that the number of friends an average person has decreases as the years go by.
The Men’s Shed is a place to socialize, learn, and work on things, but mainly it’s a place to enjoy each other. “I really enjoy Shed meetings and interacting with a lot of great guys.” Dick Groth
7. Having fun
And finally, it’s about having a laugh, enjoying people, enjoying life!
Wonderful new friends and new experiences !
A great group of guys that enjoy each other’s company and share a lot of laughs!
